Why professional development breaks at institutional scale
Professional development in education has historically been one of the most fragmented operational domains. Educators discover resources through informal channels — word of mouth, email threads, and standalone tools — while administrators manage PD programs across spreadsheets, vendor emails, and disconnected subscription platforms. The client’s vision was to replace this fragmentation with a single trusted platform: a marketplace where providers publish structured experiences, educators discover and implement them, and administrators govern adoption, track engagement, and control subscription spending. The platform needed to serve three fundamentally different user roles simultaneously, each with distinct feature requirements, without compromising the simplicity that drives adoption.
Implementing flexible membership tiers added further complexity. Free and paid tier feature controls needed to be consistent across all three roles without creating a disjointed experience. Simultaneously, the platform had to be architected for multi-campus expansion — modular enough to onboard new institutions without architectural rework — and mobile-accessible for real-time updates and communication across a distributed educator base.

A school platform serves concurrent requests from three distinct user types, each with different data access requirements, workflow patterns, and security boundaries. The architecture was designed around this constraint: a single unified data layer with role-aware API surfaces and strict per-tenant isolation.
Secure Authentication & Authorisation Layer
JWT token verification with role-based access controls enforced at the API layer. Every request carries a verified identity token; the middleware enforces feature visibility, data scope, and action permissions based on the authenticated user’s role, tier, and campus assignment — preventing privilege escalation and data leakage at the source.
Content Discovery & Management Engine
Accepts provider-submitted content packages, normalises them into a structured schema, and indexes them for search and recommendation. Powers the Educator Toolkit discovery interface with filters for subject, level, format, and provider. Handles versioning, access control gating (free vs. paid), and content status management across the provider lifecycle.
Role-Specific Workflow Layer
Routes authenticated users to their specific workflow context — provider publishing tools, educator toolkit and progress tracking, or administrator portal and reporting. Each workflow layer is independently configurable, allowing new role types or campus-specific feature sets to be added without impacting existing role interfaces.

Manages the full subscription lifecycle: plan selection, secure payment processing, automated invoice generation, reminder workflows, and renewal management. Integrates with the role and feature gate system to immediately update access permissions on payment confirmation or plan change, without manual intervention.
